Never uttering a sound, Underwood spends hours in his backyard, attempting to fly like the birds. Lucy Deakins, the daughter of the new family, befriends Underwood; she is encouraged by teacher Colleen Dewhurst to try to draw the boy out of his shell, and to keep a journal on the subject.
Much of The Boy Who Could Fly feels true to what growing up in 1980's suburbia was like, delivering glimpses of some of the finer consistencies between the domestic experience of fighting the mundane in the green grassy yards of adolescence and something like a string of commercials for Tide, Sunny Delight and G.I. Joe viewed during an After-School Special.
