Sein unnachahmlicher Slide-Stil auf der Gitarre hat viele junge Gitarristen maßgeblich beeinflußt. 1966 war Lowell in einer Band namens The Factory , die kaum etwas gebracht hatte; allerdings haben sie ein Demo eingespielt, das von Frank Zappa produziert wurde und erst 1975 veröffentlicht wurde: "Lightning Rod Man".
