Nació el 20 de octubre de 1882 en Lugoj, una localidad de la región de donde también procedía el Conde Drácula, Transilvania, por aquel entonces integrada en el imperio austrohúngaro, aunque posteriormente pasaría a formar parte de Rumanía.
