Much of this mood permeates Embryonic, right down to its core compositional philosophy. Perhaps what is most shockingly unique about the album is the overall lack of anything resembling a pop structure. Many of its best songs are short, unconstructed, dissonant, weightless, utterly without hooks, and tinged with sad reality.

Embryonic may not have the tight consistency of Yoshimi and Soft Bulletin, but this double album sees the Lips at arguably one of their most experimental corners of their career. Bouncing back for it's predecessor, this album is more adventurous and a more intriguing listen throughout. A very great record in their catalog. 8.
With Embryonic, The Flaming Lips bring with them the lush orchestration and sweet melodies from albums like The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, but they also add an abrasive and madly experimental side to those elements.I thought the album was really frustrating at first because the songs really are like embryos; small, unfinished pieces of music.
