Raised by his mom Rhoda Phifer, a teacher in Harlem, Mekhi has a special place for educators in his heart. As he told TheGrio in October 2020, "My mother was a teacher and to this day people will stop me and say, 'Hey your mother, Ms. Phifer was one of my favorite teachers.'"
