Die Formation ging aus den Hawks hervor und war zunächst die elektrisch verstärkte Begleitband von Bob Dylan, bevor sie ab 1968 selbst sieben Studioalben veröffentlichten. Zu ihren bekanntesten Songs zählen The Weight und The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.
