Hackett said his solo began as an improvised exercise on the 12-bar blues. “Bobby Hackett Waltz” was composed by frequent Riverwalk Jazz guest artist Dick Hyman in tribute to Hackett’s lyrical approach to melody. “Big Butter and Egg Man” is from Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five recordings of the 1920s.
Bobby Hackett's mellow tone and melodic style offered a contrast to the brasher Dixieland-oriented trumpeters. Emphasizing his middle-register and lyricism, Hackett was a flexible soloist who actually sounded little like his main inspiration, Louis Armstrong.
Hackett was sometimes accused of being responsible for the increase in birth rate in the 1950s because of his way with romantic ballads on the records he made with Jackie Gleason. Armstrong said of Hackett, “He’s wonderful to have playin’ with you — Bobby plays all them big notes and leaves out all that bebop-debop nonsense.”

Their fluent styles, sly wit, and cool tones were a perfect match on at least nine albums from 1968-70. Later Years. As Hackett entered his mid-fifties, he still remained close to his musical prime despite gradually declining health.

The turgid rhythm backing, dominated by the four-manual Wurlitzer pipe organ, wades sluggishly through treacle.
