At Wylam Hackworth helped William Hedley produce the locomotive Puffing Billy.

Hackworth was the eldest son of John Hackworth who occupied the position of foreman blacksmith at Wylam Colliery until his death in 1804; the father had already acquired a considerable reputation as a mechanical worker and boiler maker.
Timothy Hackworth was an engineer and inventor, born in Wylam on the 22nd December 1786.He began work as an apprentice blacksmith under his father at Wylam Colliery, where he later worked on steam locomotives as they were first beginning to be used at the colliery.Whilst at Wylam Colliery he assisted William Hedley in the production of Puffing Billy, the world's oldest surviving steam locomotive.
