Our story. The original John Spedan Lewis Foundation was established in 1967 in memory of the Partnership founder, John Spedan Lewis. Since then, the fund has evolved alongside the Foundation to progress our conservation and nature work, helping to mitigate the impact of our business and global supply chains on the natural world.
The membership scheme was inaugurated at Oliver Messel’s luncheon party on 9 November 1951 and was in part the brainchild of Mr OB Miller, John Spedan Lewis’s deputy, inspired by some of the theatre clubs in London.

Elder son of John Lewis, who owned the John Lewis department store, London, Spedan joined the business at 19 and in 1914 assumed control of Peter Jones in Sloane Square, London.
