It was built in 1876, due to the need to join the ends of the ravine and allow passage between Ayacucho and La Ermita streets.
The Bridge of Sighs is one of the most famous and photographed symbols of Venice. Located a few steps away from Piazza San Marco, the bridge connects the Doge's Palace to the Prigioni Nuove. Known today as the bridge of love , it was originally the bridge that prisoners crossed before being locked up in the Venetian prisons and from which, sighing, they could see the sunlight for the last time.

The construction of the bridge was around the year 1600. Actually, the approximately 10 meters building, about in the 1st floor over the canal Rio di Palazzo, is nothing special. The Bridge of Sighs is famous because of its function. Prisoners were brought back to prison on the bridge after the trial and conviction in the Doge's Palace.
