Her real name was Eunice Quedens, and she got the idea for her stage name from the contents of her vanity table. “Eve” came from the perfume, Evening In Paris and “Arden” was inspired by Elizabeth Arden, natch.

This failure was neutralized by her subsequent stage tours in such plays as Auntie Mame and Hello, Dolly! and her well-received film appearances in Anatomy of a Murder (1959) and Dark at the Top of the Stairs (1960).
Eve Arden was born Eunice Quedens on April 30, 1908 in Mill Valley, CA. The only child of Charles and Lucille Quedens, she was raised primarily by her mother after her parents' divorce. Relocating to San Francisco, Lucille Quedens found work as a milliner, eventually opening her own hat shop.
