Born Mabel Gardiner Hubbard in Boston in 1857, she lost her hearing at the age of five as a result of scarlet fever. Rather than teach her sign language, her parents chose the oral method of deaf education, by which Mabel continued to speak and learned to read lips. One of her later speech tutors was Alexander Graham Bell, whom she married in 1877.
Gardiner Hubbard's daughter Mabel became deaf at the age of five from scarlet fever. She later became a student of Alexander Graham Bell, who taught deaf children, and they eventually married. Hubbard's house on Brattle Street in Cambridge (on whose lawn, in 1877, Hubbard's daughter Mabel married Alexander Graham Bell) no longer stands.

She was married to the inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell. At the age of 5, she lost her hearing ability and was rendered deaf for the rest of her life.

Mabel Bell shared her husband’s scientific interests, and was co-founder (and funder) of the Aerial Experiment Association. She also undertook her own horticultural experiments. They enjoyed a close relationship with both sets of parents.

Mabel had become deaf at age five as a result of a near-fatal bout of scarlet fever. Bell began working with her in 1873, when she was 15 years old. Despite a 10-year age difference, they fell in love and were married on July 11, 1877.
