Safi Faye is not a stranger to the communities she works with. Born in 1943, she grew up in Fad’jal, a Serer village south of Dakar. Her interdisciplinary education (as an ethnologist at the Sorbonne and as a filmmaker at the Louis Lumière Film School) and her experience as a schoolteacher frame how she approaches her work.

[1] She was the first Sub-Saharan African woman to direct a commercially distributed feature film, Kaddu Beykat, which was released in 1975. She has directed several documentary and fiction films focusing on rural life in Senegal.
