Maria Ewing, who sang notable soprano and mezzo-soprano roles at leading houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, beginning in the mid-1970s, and whose ambiguity about her racial heritage helped drive her daughter, actress and director Rebecca Hall, to make the recent movie “Passing,” died Sunday at her home near Detroit. She was 71.
