I was a PhD student in film studies at the University of Pittsburgh, and excited to see a film with an all-Black cast, written and directed by a Black woman, Kasi Lemmons, screening at a mainstream suburban theater.
EVE'S BAYOU. Kasi Lemmons 1997. Over the course of a long, hot Louisiana summer, 10-year-old Eve discovers that her family’s affluent existence is merely a facade. The philandering of her suave doctor father creates a rift, throwing Eve’s mother and teenage sister into emotional turmoil.
