After American codebreakers determined the location of Yamamoto’s flight in April of 1943, his craft was shot down and he was killed in the crash.

Though the US didn’t get a chance to target him directly, Nagumo was killed during the bloody battle of Saipan, as was Lieutenant Commander Takashige Egusa of the second wave dive-bombers.
