Exeter’s Harkness method was established in 1930 with a gift from Edward Harkness, a man who believed learning should be a democratic affair. It is a simple concept: Twelve students and one teacher sit around an oval table and discuss the subject at hand. What happens at the table, however, is, as Harkness intended, a “real revolution.”.
Serving as a forum for Exeter’s student body, it features extensive news, sports and feature articles. PEA Life, known as PEAL, is a full-color magazine published three to four times a year that regularly features art and writing produced by Academy students. Exeter has its own 100-watt, student-run, non-commercial educational radio station.
Phillips Exeter Academy was founded in 1781 by Dr. John Phillips and his wife, Elizabeth, who resided in Exeter. Dr. Phillips felt strongly about what we now call community service, having given much of his time to his church, the town, and to the province. First a teacher by trade, he firmly believed in educating “youth from every quarter.”
