Gunnar Staalesen’s Varg Veum is now absolutely on my list of favourite Nordic Noir characters, having just read the first in the long series of books by the Norwegian godfather of Scandi Crime. Veum encapsulates everything I love about this genre. He is dark, lonely, broody, moody, reflective, provocative, damaged and self contained.
