Jeff Wall based this elaborately staged photograph on the prologue of Ralph Ellison’s celebrated 1952 novel, Invisible Man.The novel’s protagonist, an unnamed African American man, relates that he lives secretly “in my hole in the basement,” where he has “wired the entire ceiling, every inch of it” with 1,369 lights powered by illegally siphoned off electricity.
Jeff Wall has been making the work he recognizes as his since 1978, and it has drawn widespread international attention since 1981, with countless gallery and museum exhibitions as well as important publications. Many of his photographs are now familiar to lovers of contemporary art.

9 de may. de 2012 · Jeff Wall was the subject of a major retrospective at the Palais des Beaux Arts, Brussels, in 2011, where he displayed 25 of his pieces alongside 130 works by his favourite artists. Those works ranged from photographs by the 1900s photographer Eugène Atget and film excerpts (Fassbinder, Bergman, the Dardenne brothers) to pieces by contemporaries Thomas Struth and David Claerbout.
