Emancipated from enslavement by New York state law in 1827, she served as an itinerant preacher before becoming involved in the anti-slavery and women's rights movements.

THE subject of this biography, SOJOURNER TRUTH, as she now calls herself-but whose name, originally, was Isabella-was born, as near as she can now calculate, between the years 1797 and 1800. She was the daughter of James and Betsey, slaves of one Colonel Ardinburgh, Hurley, Ulster County, New York.
Sojourner Truth (1797-1883), nacida en esclavitud en Nueva York, escapó a Canadá en 1827, regresando cuando el estado de Nueva York abolió la esclavitud 1829.
