  1. Robert Reed Church Sr. (June 18, 1839 – August 29, 1912) was an African-American entrepreneur, businessman and landowner in Memphis, Tennessee who began his rise during the Civil War.

In 1899, Memphis didn’t provide recreational facilities for black citizens, so Church invested in “Church Park,” which contained a playground and a large concert hall where black theatrical groups could perform.
