Nascido em Ikuno, no Japão, um de seus primeiros papéis foi no filme Naniwa erejî, de Kenji Mizoguchi, em 1936.Depois de Toshiro Mifune, Shimura foi provavelmente o ator mais proximamente associado à Akira Kurosawa.
