William ‘Red’ Garland, born on May 13 in Dallas, Texas, was an American jazz pianist. He influenced many jazz pianists and was known for his block chords in his piano playing. Garland became famous in 1954 when he joined the Miles Davis Quintet consisting of: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Garland himself, Philly Joe Jones and Paul Chambers.
