Naming herself after the activist Angela Davis, she emerged in the queer and punk club performance scene of Los Angeles in the late 1970s.
Vaginal Davis’s oeuvre is where queer activism meets racial justice, where resistance meets joy, where punk meets the parlor room, and where Audre Lorde meets G.B. Jones. As a leading lady in punk, queer, and Black (art) histories in the United States and beyond, Vaginal Davis has made scenes for a living—from her hometown Los Angeles to her adopted home Berlin.
Vaginal Davis is the internationally revered intersexed doyenne of intermedia arts and sciences. She takes public discourse to Dementia 13 levels as she spells out the queer and blatino experience in her own inemitable fashion creating new words out of thin air and crashing bull-in-a-Madame Mau China-Shop style over notions of propriety and reality.
Vaginal Davis is the key proponent of the disruptive performance aesthetic known as terrorist drag. Disrupting the cultural assimilation of gay-oriented and corporate-friendly drag, she positions herself at an uncomfortable tangent to the conservative politics of gay culture, mining its contradictory impulses to interrupt the entrenchment of its assimilatory strategies.
