Bolivia was at this point part of the territory called Alto Peru along with modern-day Peru and some of Chile, until 1825 when it became independent. With its independence, Sucre was proclaimed Bolivia’s provisional and eventually official capital city, in the Bolivian constitution. Its name honors the revolutionary leader Antonio José de Sucre.
