Bishop Wordsworth’s School was founded in 1890 by John Wordsworth, Bishop of Salisbury. When he established the school his intention was that it should be a centre for education right at the very heart of Salisbury, in what is probably the most beautiful Cathedral Close in Europe.

He later attended Prior Park College, Bath, then run by the Irish Christian Brothers. He trained for the priesthood at the Venerable English College, Rome and was ordained Priest on 18 July 1948 in the Leonine College, Rome.

After Bishop Wordsworth's death in 1911, the school was renamed to Bishop Wordsworth's School to continue the lasting tradition of quality education that he had started. In July 1892 the school adopted its first Science Specialism(!) and as a result the Chemistry Lab was equipped that year too.
