Il est le plus jeune des six enfants de Toussaint-Honoré Fauré (1810-1885) et de Marie-Antoinette-Hélène Lalène-Laprade (1809-1887). En 1849 la famille s'installe près de Foix, à M ontgauzy où Toussaint-Honoré est nommé directeur de l'École normale.
