It was first made popular by the Motown vocal group Martha and the Vandellas, [1] who issued it as a single on July 10, 1963, [2] on the Motown subsidiary Gordy label. The single reached number one on the Billboard Hot R&B chart—where it stayed for four weeks—and peaking at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

He was the writer or co-writer of many of the band's most popular songs. Stanley established The Starchild character for his Kiss persona.
