Yes, people absolutely do this. I haven't done it in many years. I've attended the awards themselves a couple times. It's a lot of fun! This year, since they are at Koch theater for the first time, I don't know what the setup will be, but I bet if you swing by the day before they will have the barricades, bleachers, etc. mostly set up so you can get a sense.
