Hal Blaine (born Harold Simon Belsky; February 5, 1929 – March 11, 2019) was an American drummer and session musician. He was one of the most prolific session drummers in the history of popular music, playing on a large number of hit records.
Hal was also becoming a first-call drummer for many rock sessions—in particular, those produced by Phil Spector. Blaine’s “boom, ba-boom BOP’ intro to “Be My Baby” by the Ronettes is one of the most recognizable drum beats in popular music history.
Jim Keltner was a member of Gary Lewis and the Playboys when he first met Hal. As he recalls, “The first recording session [for “She’s Just My Style”], Hal was playing tambourine. He was there in case I couldn’t cut it.
