Lord John Stewart (23 October 1621 – 29 March 1644) was a Scottish aristocrat who served as a Royalist commander in the English Civil War. He was one of six sons of Esmé Stewart, 3rd Duke of Lennox and his wife Katherine Clifton, 2nd Baroness Clifton, and the brother of James Stewart, 1st Duke of Richmond .

The life-size double portrait depicts the two youngest sons of Esmé Stewart, 3rd Duke of Lennox: Lord John Stewart (1621–1644) and Lord Bernard Stuart (1622–1645), aged about 17 and 16 respectively.

1 de feb. de 2024 · Lord John Stuart was just 22-years of age when he, too, made the ultimate sacrifice to the royalist cause – in his case, at the battle of Cheriton in Hampshire in March 1644. Commanding the royalist cavalry he was mortally wounded and was carried from the battlefield to Oxford, the king’s wartime headquarters.
