This CD is a tribute to two great American modern classical composers : Charles Ives and Louis Moreau Gottschalk, yet this music is far from classical, it is modern jazz : melodic, rhythmic and adventurous. Lindberg uses many influences, and at moments this sounds like world music, with Arabic and Asian influences.
Baikida Carrol alternates adroitly between trumpet and flugelhorn while Steve Gorn counts bansuri flute, clarinet and soprano saxophone amongst his chosen implements. Percussionist Susie Ibarra joins Lindberg in a rich confluence of rhythmic and harmonic ingenuity.
Although two of his compositions here directly refer to Gottschalk and Ives, Lindberg doesn’t crassly invoke any of their music. RUMINATIONS is definitely a suite though, with the first and final tracks assuming a circular continuum. Bouncy and vamp-like, the CD takes shape through instrumental virtuosity.
