   General Hartman Bache, after receiving a good English and classical education, entered the U. S. Military Academy when scarce sixteen, from which institution he was graduated July 24, 1818, and at once entered the Army as assistant topographical engineer, with the rank of Bvt. Captain in the General Staff.
