Alfred Charles Freiherr de Rothschild, CVO (20 July 1842 – 31 January 1918), was the second son of Lionel Freiherr de Rothschild and Charlotte Freifrau von Rothschild of the Rothschild family .
Alfred de Rothschild was the fourth of five children of Lionel and Charlotte de Rothschild and was born in London on 20 July 1842. He spent his childhood in the family homes at 148 Piccadilly and Gunnersbury.

Alfred de Rothschild was the son of Lionel Nathan de Rothschild (1808–1879), who was the son of Nathan Meyer de Rothschild (1777–1836), and Charlotte von Rothschild. Aged 21 he joined the Rothschild Bank in London. From 1868 until 1889 he became director of the Bank of England.
