Strauss and the tone poem. As a genre, the symphonic (or tone) poem went against the grain of Richard Strauss’s upbringing. Born in 1864 in the Bavarian capital of Munich, Strauss had a comfortable, bourgeois childhood. It was, however, dominated by his father’s musical opinions.
