Marischal College was founded in 1593, becoming Aberdeen's second university. King's College had been founded in 1495. The two Colleges merged in 1860 to form the modern University of Aberdeen. Medicine and Law were taught at Marischal and Arts and Divinity at King's College.
Marischal College. Marischal College has been leased by the University to Aberdeen City Council, and has been renovated to become the Council's new headquarters, as well as the city centre base for Police Scotland.
Marischal College is said to be the second biggest granite building in the world (the largest being the Escorial in Spain). It is a blend of two styles: A. Marshall Mackenzie’s ‘perpendicular gothic’ (1890s) and Archibald Simpson’s earlier more austere architecture (1837).

The college's huge and impressive facade overlooking Broad St, in perpendicular Gothic style – unusual in having such elaborate masonry hewn from notoriously hard-to-work granite – dates from 1906 and is the world's second-largest granite structure (after El Escorial near Madrid).
