Kurt Elling (born November 2, 1967) is an American jazz singer and songwriter. Born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in Rockford, Elling became interested in music through his father, who was Kapellmeister at a Lutheran church. He sang in choirs and played musical instruments.
Burrowing into Patchen’s words with sly gravity and wit, Elling adds a working-class patter to the twisted work parable “Job” and taps into his inner Tom Waits with a stumbling slur on “Opening The Window.”

As with Royal Toast (Cuneiform, 2010), the Quintet + 1 settles into its now familiar mix of chamber jazz-meets-pop-and-minimalism, a style that surely is in need of a label.
