The Monument. The Parthenon is the most characteristic and famous monument of the Acropolis. It was built on the ruins of the archaic Ekatompedon on the initiative of Pericles in 447 BC, as part of his plan to rebuild the temples of the Acropolis after their destruction by the Persians in 480 BC. The architects who undertook its design were Ictinus and Callicrates.
