His first recordings were all with Charlie Parker, the first as the Jay McShann Orchestra on August 9, 1940. The band played both swing and blues numbers, but played blues on most of its records; its most popular recording was "Confessin' the Blues" with Walter Brown on vocals.
This fine selection of tracks made during the years 1941 to 1945 captures the band in its early glory stomping, driving, jumping and most adeptly of all investigating the Blues. The Blues, Kansas City style, was its forte.

Most of these records were by “Julia Lee and Her Boy Friends,” an integrated group that often included pianist Jay McShann, saxophonist Benny Carter, vibraphonist Red Norvo, and cornettist Red Nichols. Although her recording career slowed after 1949, she continued to perform regularly in the Kansas City area and on tours.
