Following 2014’s complete Rachmaninov Songs (Delphian DCD34127), pianist Iain Burnside rejoined three of the singers from that set (Siurina, Gringytė and Pogossov) and added three more (Palchykov, Tritschler, and Didenko) for this two-disc survey of Medtner’s songs.
Some Medtner songs have instant appeal, be it the bravura of Winter Evening or the delicious languor of Midday. Others need persistence from both listener and performer. Pianists flicking through Medtner songs for the first time can be forgiven for echoing John McEnroe: You cannot be serious. Vocal lines don’t always go where you expect them to.
