Joseph Rickman is a pleasant and rather eccentric school teacher, who is the object of gossip by his students, due to his committing an act of heroism 16 years previously. However, he feels his life is quite literally beyond his control.

At first he seeks solace from a priest (Reynolds' first confessional in 20 years). The priest's celestial comment is "Wow!"
