Thompson was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1989, and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1997. He continued touring throughout the U.S. until shortly before he became ill.

As a boy, Thompson took up first the harmonica and then the guitar. When he was a teenager, he began broadcasting as “Hank the Hired Hand” on local radio in Waco.
