Su verdadero nombre era Jessaja Granach, y nació en Werbowitz (Wierzbowce/Werbiwci), Austria Hungría, en la región de Galitzia, actualmente Verbivtsi, en el Óblast de Ivano-Frankivsk de Ucrania.
