She first came to prominence in 1985, winning the World Indoor title and ranking #1 in the world for the year. In 1986 she equalled her compatriot Lyudmila Andonova's world record, bettering it to 2.08 m several days later.
Stefka Kostadinova is a former world record holder and Olympic champion in high jump. She also became a sports administrator and the president of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee.
