Johann Niemann (4 August 1913 – 14 October 1943) was a German SS officer and Holocaust perpetrator who was deputy commandant of Sobibor extermination camp during Operation Reinhard.
Some of the images depict Sobibor personnel laughing and posing for vanity shots all while implementing the mass murder of at least 167,000 innocent Jews. Niemann was killed during the Sobibor prisoner revolt on October 14, 1943, after which the camp was closed and demolished.
Johann Niemann, von Beruf Maler und Anstreicher, wurde 1931 Mitglied der NSDAP (Mitgliedsnummer 753.836) und trat auch der SS (Mitgliedsnr. 270.600) bei. Er war Unterscharführer der Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler. Zwischen 1934 und 1941 war er im KZ Esterwegen und dem KZ Sachsenhausen eingesetzt.
