Te Rauparaha was a Māori chief and warlord who expanded Ngāti Toa's territory in the 19th century. He fought in the Musket Wars, signed the Treaty of Waitangi, and composed the famous haka "Ka Mate".

Te Rauparaha was the son of Werawera, of Ngāti Toa, and his second wife, Parekōwhatu (Parekōhatu), of Ngāti Raukawa. He is said to have been a boy when James Cook was in New Zealand. If so, it is likely that he was born in the 1760s.
