William Turner RWS (29 November 1789 – 7 August 1862) was a British painter who specialised in watercolour landscapes. He is often known as William Turner of Oxford or just Turner of Oxford to distinguish him from his contemporary, J. M. W. Turner (known as William).

Acknowledged as one of the greatest landscape artists of all time, Turner (1775–1851) knew Oxford extremely well and, from childhood, made numerous drawings of the streets and colleges and the picturesque views surrounding the city.
The distinctive Gothic spires, crenellated towers, and domes of New College, Oxford, seen from the north, rise beneath an expansive sky. A few figures punctuate the wide field that dominates the scene, with a scholar wearing a distinctive cap and gown walking at left, and two girls stooped at center to pick wildflowers.
