Helsingborg es una de las ciudades más antiguas de Suecia. Ha sido el lugar de asentamiento permanente de forma oficial desde el 21 de mayo de 1085. Helsingborg perteneció a Dinamarca hasta 1658, año en que fue cedida a Suecia. No obstante, los daneses la reconquistaron en varias ocasiones y no pasó a la definitiva soberanía sueca hasta 1710. Es un puerto importante y uno de los principales centros manufactureros y de negocios del país.
