History. During April 1887, J. I. Berry established a site for a town after he chose a well-watered section along the right-of-way of the Fort Worth and Denver City Railroad, which had begun building across the Texas Panhandle. Berry and Colorado City, Texas, merchants wanted to make their new town site the region's main trading center.
History of Amarillo, Texas. Amarillo, county seat of Potter County, is situated near the geographic center of the Texas Panhandle, earning it the nickname "Crossroads of the Panhandle." The first European to reach the area was Coronado in 1541.
The town was first named “Oneida” but soon changed to Amarillo, meaning “yellow” in Spanish for the soil color on the nearby banks of Amarillo Creek and the abundant yellow wildflowers during the spring and the summer.
