He later became the first Archbishop of Baltimore. Until 1808, Carroll administered the entire U.S. Catholic Church.

To a Protestant minister who said to the dying prelate that his hopes were now directed to another world, Archbishop Carroll replied: "Sir, my hopes have been always fixed on the Cross of Christ".
